Shown above from conception to service, the shift knob was created based on a foam and glazing putty model
provided by the customer. The complex geometry proved impossible to manufacture by any traditional
methods, and was accomplished by employing a powdered metallurgy process. In this case the process
involves melting powdered 6Al-4V titanium alloy with a laser inside of an evacuated chamber. The design was
hollowed out in the design phase to save cost and weight, with an average wall thickness of only 2.5mm. The
end result was certainly one of a kind, and attached to an amazing custom chopper, a real eye-opener. This
particular customer was so thrilled by the project, that he made custom t-shirts with a mean sketch of the
shifter on the front and back, two of which are now the proud property of Valdar D&M !
